1918 Gibson L-1
Built at the end of the first World War 99 years ago, this L-1 has aged well and remains a viable, playable, and wonderful guitar. A small archtop with round soundhole, carved birch and spruce body and a short scale neck, this Gibson L-1 sounds nothing like later F-hole model. It's a punchy and forward instrument, with a warm dryness though the midrange, and a compact and articulate low end. It's a fun guitar to play 1920's era raggy-jazzy tunes on, and cuts well in a jam setting.
The guitar is largely in good shape, but does have an old heel-repair and reglued back/side seam near the neck. The top arch is excellent and there isn't any sink under the bridge, neck angle is perfect, frets play very cleanly, and it intonates well. The finish is a hundred years old, so expect it not to be perfect. That said it's completely original. Original bridge and pickguard, original nut and tuning machines, replacement tailpiece.
The full V-carve neck is substantial but comfortable. Its size is made smaller in feel by the well-radiussed fingerboard and our set-up. The action measures 5 to 6 64ths at the 12th fret. 1-3/4" nut width, 2-3/8" string spacing at the bridge and short 24 1/4" scale length.
With modern deluxe hardshell case.
