1929 Gibson Nick Lucas Special
FON 92?8, Serial number N/A. A wonderfully responsive light weight guitar, this small-body mahogany Nick Lucas Special has a spaciousness to its mid-range distinctive of the 9000 FON Gibsons built right around 1929 and 1930. The guitar's deep body depth and 'A' bracing adds a subtle boxiness that is the hallmark of this version of Nick Lucas. It's an interesting mix of X-braced and ladder-braced tone, but with an extra push in the low frequency range thanks to the increased air volume inside the body -- and it all works surprisingly well with a heavy flatpick.
The guitar has a list of repairs, but is in fine playing order. Numerous cracks in the top and back, repaired heel crack, plugged hole in the treble side, tailpiece screw holes, replacement bridgeplate and bridge, binding pulling away in the back treble side waist, newer bridge pins and end pin. About half of the label has crumbled away, including the serial number line. Some of the old cracks have been re-repaired in our shop, others were structurally fine as they were. Bridge and oversized bridgeplate were made and installed by us. Original frets play well up the neck, original banjo tuners hold their pitch fine, set up is to our shop standard. Round neck with 1-3/4" nutwidth, short 24.2" scale length. Included in the case are a pair of vintage Nick Lucas scores and a 2 by 3 inch piece of paper bearing Nick Lucas' signature.
With original hardshell case
