The amplifier's circuit is largely original apart from some replaced capacitors, including filter and signal caps, as part of general servicing. The original Gibson-branded "Ultrasonic Reproducer" speaker is in good shape and still has its original cone. All transformers are original.

This 1938 Gibson EH-150 sounds exactly the way you want it to and is surprisingly loud. The introduction of a larger headstock in late 1965, black headstock decal and "F-style" tuners in 1967, and transition to polyester finishes from nitrocellulose in 1967-68 all marked a gradual shift away from the classic Stratocaster specs of the "Pre-CBS" era. The most significant structural shift in the design of the Stratocaster came about in 1971 when Fender moved away from their classic bolt-on neck design that employed 4 screws, opting for a 3-bolt system with an extra set-screw to adjust neck angle. At the same time, Fender's adjustable truss rod was modified to be adjustable at the headstock by use of an allen wrench, as opposed to the classic Phillips screw at the heel. The adjustable end of the truss rod at the headstock resembled a bullet, leading to player's referring to it as the "bullet truss rod." For many collectors, Fender's adoption of the 3-bolt neck and bullet truss rod marks the end of the company's golden era and full transition into CBS manufacturing.

An early 1971 build, this Stratocaster is among the last of its kind to feature the traditional 4-bolt neck joint. It's a wonderfully resonant guitar that sounds incredible when plugged in and it feels great, standing as a testament to the high quality of instruments that were still being produced in the early years of the CBS takeover. The neck is dated to May of 1971 and the potentiometers are dated to the 52nd week of 1970.

This 4-bolt Strat is in largely original condition with the exception of a replaced 3-way switch (original included in case pocket) a new trem arm, and a clean refret with vintage-style wire. The original Sunburst finish shows signs of play wear typical of a fifty-something year old instrument. There is a finish blemish above the pick guard by the neck pickup where something reacted with the poly overcoat. It may have been caused by adhesive from a sticker, but we are unsure. The headstock has a suntan caused by a sticker or piece of tape that has since been removed. The original finish on the neck has a wonderfully worn-in feel that makes the guitar seem older than it is.

Equipped with a trio of original and unmodified pickups that measure 5.7K in the neck position and 5.6K in both the middle and bridge. This one features a 4-piece red spruce top, a truss-rod-equipped three-piece maple neck, and rosewood board and bridge. It was likely built in the spring of 1944, just prior to the CMI purchase of Gibson.

Although the guitar has a few repaired cracks and handful of reglued braces, it is largely original, including its finish, bridge, bridgeplate, tuners, and nut. There is no pickguard crack, which is a welcomed surprise. There is a ¼” spruce infill to a chip on the soundhole’s edge at the 10 o’clock position. Finally, there was a tailpiece installed on this guitar for some time which left markings on the top that are purely cosmetic.

The guitar’s back has four repaired cracks; the sides are crack-free. There’s plenty of strap wear by the endpin and the tailpiece mounting hole has been nicely plugged. The original bridge remains full height; it has a repaired crack through the pin line and infill along its back edge where it was modified to stay out of the way of the tailpiece-mounted strings; something we see fairly regularly. Thankfully, the original bridge plate remains in excellent condition. As the guitar’s top was fairly lightly built there is some distortion around the bridge area – it’s the kind of thing that often accompanies the best sounding guitars.

The neck on this Banner SJ is round and deep. Interestingly, the model didn't change in any real significant way until the later 1920s, and it remained a round-soundhole model until the Gibson catalogue was revamped in the mid 1930s. This is a Loar-period L-4, and features an adjustable bridge and truss rod – both of which were brand new design features when this guitar was built.

This example is a particularly lovely oval-hole Gibson L-4. It’s crack free and largely original, it sounds quite wonderful and is beautifully set-up with new frets and a properly compensated bridge care of our shop. The instrument's original finish shows some light playwear and an assortment of dings and scratches but nothing terribly unsightly. There are areas of chemical finish damage on the body’s back side that might have been caused by a vinyl strap or some other reactive plastic that came in contact with the finish. The original tuning machines work well, and the tailpiece, pickguard, and pearl nut all remain in excellent shape. The bridge is an aged replacement that was installed in our shop; it features a solid base that’s perfectly fit to the top and a 1950s Gibson-style top with compensation. The Casino made its debut in 1961 as Gibson was expanding Thinline model variety in the Epiphone line. Nearly identical to Gibson's ES-330TD, Epiphone's E-230TD Casino is a 16" fully hollow guitar with a 16-fret neck joint that’s equipped with a pair of P-90 pickups. Apart from a few cosmetic appointments, the E-230TD Casino and ES-330TD were effectively the same guitar.

While the Casino and ES-330 remained mostly structurally consistent throughout the 1960s, 1968 brought about a significant change for both models in the form of a 19-fret to the body neck joint. With a little over 500 Casinos produced between 1968 and 1970, when the model was discontinued, the "long-neck" version of the E-230TD is a fairly rare instrument.

A beautifully preserved and completely original instrument, this 1968 Epiphone Casino is an excellent example of the late 1960s long-neck version. The guitar features typical late '60s Gibson appointments, including chrome hardware, "witch-hat" style knobs, a lean neck profile, and an Indian rosewood fingerboard (no CITES permits needed). This particular Casino is factory equipped with a Frequensator tailpiece. While this style of tailpiece was typically reserved for Epiphone's Sheraton and Rivera models, they are frequently seen on Casinos built between 1967 and 1970.

This Casino is in well-above-average condition, but there are minor small chips and dents in the finish here and there. We have swapped the P-90 pole pieces with screws of a shorter profile to allow for optimal distance between the pole pieces and the strings. The original pole pieces are safely bagged in the guitar's case pocket.

With its clean Sunburst finish, powerful P-90 pickups, fast neck, and largely unworn original frets, this E-230TD Casino has got it all - stunning looks, incredible tone, and fantastic playability. Both of these new large guitars featured 16” wide bodies with deep sides that didn’t taper much in thickness between the endblock and neck heel. As Gibson transitioned from the Jumbo to the more tapered-sided J-35 in 1936, the Smeck followed suit. As such, the early Smeck models are the only ones built with a deeper body. This example is from the 4th and final documented batch of Smeck Stage Deluxes built in 1936, likely from around the middle of the year and among the last of the deep-bodied Smecks. The depth of the sides taper from 4-1/2” at the endpin to 4-3/16” at the neck heel.

Originally built as a Hawaiian, or lap-style guitar, this Smeck has been converted for Spanish (AKA Normal) style playing. The neck depth at the 1st fret is .890”, which feels appropriately sized and neither too large or too small. The headstock front and back and the neck heel retain their original finish; side dots and real frets were added during the conversion. The original fingerboard was reused and has not ever been separated from the neck; no truss rod was added in the process (and none was needed). The original bridge remains in excellent condition and has been reslotted for proper intonation. The aged bone saddle was installed here, the bridge pins are original. The neck bears Tadeo Gomez’ initials and a neck date of June 1954, and the tremolo spring cavity is also marked June '54 in pencil. The control cavity has Gloria’s name on piece of tape dated to the 18th of June, 1954. At some point in decades passed, this Stratocaster had an electric mandolin neck, pickup assembly, and bridge mounted to its bass-side. In order to accommodate the addition of the mandolin, a 2" piece of wood was removed at the tip of the horn, a pickup cavity and wiring channel were routed out, and a small strip of wood was removed to fit the bridge. A strap button was added inside of the bass-side cutaway as the original was removed to accommodate the placement of the mandolin neck. The modification was later reversed with all previous routes plugged and a new 2" of mismatched wood carved and grafted onto the missing bass-side horn tip. A small piece of pickguard has been replaced in the area where the mandolin's bridge was previously installed. Unfortunately, we do not have any photos of the guitar with the mandolin neck mounted as the modification was reversed before the guitar's current owner purchased it.

Much of the guitar's finish appears to be original; however, there is obviously new finish over the areas that were repaired when the structural modifications were reversed. A little bit of yellow paint residue in the pores and low worn areas suggests that the body was likely once painted with something that didn’t bond with the underlying lacquer as the original sunburst finish is still intact. The burst itself is correct for the time period, and the contours suggest the guitar never had its finish sanded off. The neck shows signs of overspray and sections of refinish; the decal is under finish and is likely a good reproduction. Many of the plastics are original, including the pickguard, and two of the impossibly rare "short skirt" knobs. The original crumbling polystyrene pickup covers are included in the case pocket. The switch tip is a reproduction part and the original plastic backplate is long gone.

This 1954 Fender Stratocaster boasts a largely original wiring harness with three original black bobbin pickups. There are a number of solder joints that have been modified as the electronics for the previously installed mandolin pickup were connected to the original wiring harness. It is impossible to say with any certainty if the pickups are original or rewound, as such. They look and sound quite right, for whatever that’s worth.

The trio of black bobbin pickups sound truly incredible offering a full-bodied response with excellent midrange support in the bridge position (6.61K), an airy and harmonically rich voice in the middle (5.98K), and wonderfully warm tones that are articulate and clear from the neck (6.56k).

With a soft V carve, a first fret depth of 0.877", twelfth fret depth of 0.972", a nut width that is just shy of 1-5/8", the neck carve is nothing short of heavenly. Playability is excellent thanks to a recent refret by our shop using modern 6105 wire. The guitar weighs in at a light 7.3lbs.

All of its modifications aside, this first year Stratocaster is a remarkably good guitar that holds huge historical significance. By the mid-1960s, recognizing a growing appreciation for their pre-war instruments, Martin began designing guitars that echoed those earlier builds. Among them were the 12-fret dreadnoughts. From the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, Martin produced roughly one 12-fret D for every twenty-five 14-fret versions—so while never especially plentiful, the 12-fret dreadnought certainly enjoyed a notable resurgence during that period.

This example is a 12-fret D-35S from 1972. With the advent of the Humbucker in 1957, Gibson updated the ES-175 to feature its newly developed hum-cancelling pickups. ES-175s were made available in both Sunburst and Natural finishes, with examples of the former shipping in far greater numbers. The only replaced parts on the guitar are reproduction tuner buttons and a period-correct tailpiece that we transplanted from a damaged 1959 ES-175 we’ve had for a while. The patina on the tailpiece perfectly matches that of the pickup covers, making the change impossible to detect without disassembly.

The original PAF pickups are particularly hot, reading 8.5K in the bridge position and 8.7k in the neck. Since the company's first foray into the solid-body guitar market with the Les Paul Model in 1952, it was clear that the solid-body electric Spanish guitar was here to stay. By the end of the decade, Gibson began to focus heavily on electric guitar design and production, introducing a new hum-canceling pickup along with several newly designed solid-body guitar models while updating others. The success of a certain double-cutaway solid-body electric being produced in California by Gibson's competition had not gone unnoticed, and the company responded by revamping their Les Paul Junior and Special models into a double-cutaway design in 1958. These second-variant Les Paul Juniors and Specials were produced from mid '58 through early '61, after which the models was redesigned to what we now refer to as the "SG."

A lightweight and resonant double cutaway Les Paul Junior with the perfect amount of honest wear, this example from 1960 is an exciting guitar. Much like the original guitar it is based on, this 2015 Gibson Custom Les Paul boasts a beautiful unfaded Cherry Sunburst finish over a heavily figured top. The guitar has been aged to replicate the exact wear patterns of the original '59 Burst that Gibson used as a template. This guitar is #138 of only 300 built.

Vintage accuracy and rarity aside, this 2015 offering is a truly remarkable Les Paul. The pair of unpotted BurstBucker pickups with alnico 3 magnets deliver open, dynamic, and airy tones that are very much akin to the tonal response of genuine PAFs. The '59 neck carve is nothing short of heavenly. Expect a full C carve that feels incredibly natural and uncumbersome. This example has a 1943/44 bridge and an attractive firestripe pickguard. It was long-ago refinished with a unique cherry edgeburst, and a marquetry strip was carefully inlaid along the top’s centreline. With prices for golden-era ES-335s continuing to climb, this ’62 presents an opportunity to acquire an otherwise exceptionally clean Mickey Mouse-ear, factory stop-tail, PAF-equipped example at a substantially reduced price.

The guitar is free of structural repairs. The original finish remains in excellent condition with only a few minor chips and areas of checking. Currently setup with a modern bridge, the original no-wire ABR-1 is included in the case pocket. The tailpiece is a period-correct stop-tail; however, traces of gold in crevices suggest that it was originally a gold part that has had its plating rubbed off.

Both PAF pickups have had their original covers removed and reinstalled at some point, and the slot-head mounting screws on the baseplate of the bridge pickup may be replacements. While slot-head bobbin screws are found on PAFs from the early 1960s, wear on these particular screws suggests that they have been turned since leaving the Gibson factory. All other hardware and electronics remain original.

A fantastic-sounding ES-335, this ‘62 delivers exactly the kind of airy, open, dynamic, and overtone-rich response that one hopes to find in a golden-era semi-hollow. The bridge PAF measures 7.9kΩ and offers a full-bodied, powerful voice with beautiful piano-like clarity, while the 7.7kΩ neck pickup is warm and complex with an articulate attack.

With minimally worn and dressed original frets, an excellent neck angle, and a fast, comfortable neck carve that measures 0.780" at the first fret and 0.880" at the twelfth, this ES-335 plays effortlessly. The nut measures just shy of 1-11/16", and at 7 lbs 13 oz, it offers a particularly comfortable playing experience.

A clean, original, great-sounding PAF ES-335 with an interesting history and a significant price advantage, this ’62 is an especially appealing golden-era 335.

With original hardshell case.

**USD Price includes Shopify fees

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/178725479082311962_Gibson_ES335TD-0826-bf.jpg?v=1790991400
2023-fender-custom-shop-ltd-reverse-50s-telecaster-relic-5654
2023 Fender Custom Shop LTD Reverse '50s Telecaster Relic

An exciting reimagining of a 1950s Telecaster, this 2023 Reverse '50s Tele from Fender's Custom Shop delivers unique functionality and aesthetics and a refreshing take on the company's classic design.

This Fender Custom Shop Telecaster takes its "Reverse" designation quite seriously. The guitar features a reverse angle Nocaster bridge, which orients the bridge pickup closer to the bass-side saddles, allowing for a tighter and more aggressive bass response along with meatier and thicker trebles. The control plate has been mounted in reverse, giving a player easier access to the volume knob. To top it off, the guitar features a black finish with a white guard, a near opposite to the classic black pickguard over a blond finish typical of an early '50s Telecaster.

Equipped with a pair of Custom Shop Hand-Wound '50-‘51 Blackguard pickups, this Telecaster delivers a thick, mid-forward response in the bridge position, with an added element of bite and clarity from the angle of the pickup. The neck pickup delivers a wonderfully warm and airy voice with excellent note separation. The guitar features Fender's "Modified '51 Nocaster Wiring," in which the bridge pickup is engaged in position 1, the neck pickup is engaged in position 2, and the neck pickup with a 10k resistor is engaged in position 3. Playability is excellent thanks to unworn frets, a fresh set-up, and a full neck carve that is nothing short of heavenly.

Two-piece select ash body. Available in both single and double pickup configurations, the ES-125TC and ES-125TDC models were quite successful for Gibson, selling well throughout the 1960s.

This 1966 ES-125TDC is a remarkably well-preserved vintage Gibson guitar. Its original Cherry Sunburst finish is in excellent condition and is largely unworn - the only signs of playwear are a handful of minor dents and a few small chips. Minimal finish crazing can be found throughout. An excuse-free instrument, this ES-125 is completely original and has never seen any repairs. The original frets play cleanly across the fingerboard, and the neck angle is excellent.

With its two original and unmodified "dog-ear" P-90 pickups, this ES-125TDC is a spectacular sounding thinline with a wide tonal palette. The bridge pickup delivers a full and airy response that pushes the front end of an amplifier beautifully when the guitar’s volume is set at 10. It develops a clean, sparkly, and articulate voice as the volume knob is rolled back. The neck pickup on this guitar is incredibly special, offering thick, creamy tones with amazing sustain and depth. Whether it's rock, country, jazz, or a contemporary guitar tone you are after, there is a setting on this 125 to achieve it.

While this ES-125 has the 1-9/16" nut-width typical of a post-1965 Gibson instrument, a deep neck carve with full shoulders offsets the leaner string spacing. Unfortunately, Fender's attempt to capitalize on the trends and fashions of the late 1960s proved to be a commercial flop, and both Paisley Red and Blue Floral finishes were dropped from the catalog in 1969.

A completely unique finish in the guitar world, the Paisley Red and Blue Floral finishes used a heavily textured self-adhesive cling-foil wrap applied directly to the body, which was then finished over with a thick polyurethane clear coat. The instability of the cling-foil wrap would often cause the polyurethane top coat to crack and peel, something that is thankfully not plaguing this guitar all too badly.

A finely preserved example of a Paisley Red Telecaster, this '68 build boasts a clean, original finish with minimal cracking. The original metallic red burst has faded over the decades, giving the guitar a beautiful, irreplicable vintage aesthetic. There is some chipping around the guitar's edges and neck plate; and, while there is some slight delamination of the cling-foil wrap on the guitar's back, none of the finish has peeled off of the guitar. This Paisley Tele is completely original and unmodified apart from a professional refret in which the fingerboard finish was not touched up or oversprayed. The original frets and nut are in the guitar's case pocket. The two original pickups have their original windings, and all solder joints appear to be untouched.

Built in mid 1968, this Paisley Tele sports a nitro-finished neck that has a wonderful worn-in feel. Fender transitioned to thick polyurethane finishes on their necks in late 1968, drastically changing the feel of their guitars. With its thin nitro finish and "maple-cap" fingerboard, the neck on this Paisley Telecaster offers a playing experience akin to a 1950s Telecaster. The neck carve is a full C profile that is immensely comfortable, and the 1st fret neck depth measures .869”.

This 1968 Paisley is a notably good-sounding Tele. The bridge pickup delivers an open, clear response with a pleasant top-end sparkle. The neck pickup is particularly special, offering a full and powerful voice with excellent definition. While the neck position on a Telecaster can leave something to be desired, the neck pickup on this guitar is certainly an exception to the norm. Both pickups have just the right amount of microphonics, giving this Telecaster an airy and overtone-rich response in every pickup position.

Neck date of July 1968 (3 JUL 68 B) and pot codes of the 17th week of 1966 (304-6617).
