Bahamas is Afie Set: c.1959 Guild M-75 Aristocrat & 1969 Fender Bronco

An incredible pair in from Canadian music icon Afie Jurvanen, this c.1959 Guild M-75 Aristocrat and 1969 Fender Bronco were the main guitar and amp pairing used to record Bahamas’ 2014 ‘Bahamas is Afie’ album. Afie played this Guild plugged straight into this Bronco on all of the tracks of that album, which earned him two Juno awards and was named Best Album of 2014 by the CBC’s Q. A signed certificate of provenance will accompany this guitar and amp.

Making its debut in 1954, Guild's M-75 Aristocrat was the company's answer to the Les Paul and Duo Jet models that had all hit the scene in the early 1950s. While the M-75 gave the appearance of being a solid body instrument like the Les Paul, it was in fact fully hollow, giving the guitar an attack and level of sustain more akin to that of a Gretsch DuoJet or an electrified archtop.

With its beautifully aged sunburst finish, heavenly neck feel and remarkable tone, this late 1950s M-75 Aristocrat is an incredibly exciting vintage electric guitar that has our entire staff smitten. The original Franz single coil pickups -  6.6K (bridge) and 6.4K (neck) - deliver a versatile array of tones that are rich and full with excellent note definition and clarity. As soon as you plug this guitar in it's easy to see why it became a staple in the Bahamas lineup of instruments. With a first fret depth of 0.865", ninth fret depth of 0.935" and nut width just shy of 1-5/8", the guitar's neck carve is fabulously comfortable. With its incredible neck profile and the guitar's scant weight of 5.75 lbs, this Guild M-75 is an effortless guitar play for hours on end.

The original tailpiece and bridge have been replaced and a Bigbsy has been added to make the guitar a more versatile instrument. There is plenty of playwear throughout the guitar, a notable chip in the treble-side neck binding around the 7th fret, and tiny, repaired crack at the output jack. The original frets are low but functional. We’ve set this guitar up in shop.

Afie's 1969 Fender Bronco is an excellent low-wattage amplifier that breaks up beautifully when paired with the Franz pickups in this Guild M-75. The Fender Bronco amplifier, essentially a rebranded Vibrochamp, was produced from 1967 though 1980 and was originally sold along the entry-level Bronco guitar. The amplifier offers out 4 watts of power and has built-in tremolo. It’s speaker has been upgraded with a Celestion G8A-15, but its transformers and circuitry remain original.

The Guild Aristocrat comes with its original hardshell case.
The Fender Bronco comes with a canvas cover that’s as old as the amp.
