Gibson Custom’s uppermost echelon of instrument builders comprises the Gibson Custom Crimson Team - a small subset of Custom Shop luthiers “held to the highest standards of craftsmanship and creativity,” according to Gibson literature. Crimson-certified instruments span all styles and are conceived, designed and appointed individually by each Crimson Team builder. Presented here is a Custom Crimson L-5 Signature, completed in 2012.
This guitar is a unique interpretation of Gibson’s L-5 Signature, drawing inspiration from the Lee Ritenour model. Lavishly appointed, it features a 15.5” wide, fully hollow, thin-body archtop with multi-layer binding, an Art Deco-style pickguard with mounted humbucker and integrated volume control, and gold hardware throughout. The carved, hand-graduated top and back showcase beautifully figured maple, finished in a striking Crimson Burst nitrocellulose lacquer. Traditional L-5 appointments are complemented by Gibson’s adjustable finger tailpiece, as found on the Ritenour Signature model.
This 2012 L-5 Signature is in very fine condition. Play wear to the finish is largely nonexistent, and light wear to frets one through nine does not affect playability. Minor finish crazing is present around the neck joint, typical of Gibson instruments from this era.
The guitar’s neck has a medium C shape with a 1-11/16” nut and neck depth that tapers from from .753” at the first fret to .882" at the ninth. The scale length measures 25.5” as is typical for the L-5 model. The BJB floating humbucker pickup measures 6.1K. The guitar weighs 5lbs 12oz.
