The Atkin White Rice pays homage to Tony Rice’s famous 1935 Martin D-28, famously known as “The Antique” or, simply, 58957. Prior to Tony Rice, the guitar was owned by Clarence White, who found it in disrepair in 1959, its soundhole already whittled away and with no fretboard.
The Atikin White Rice features a Sitka spruce top with scalloped red spruce braces, a 4-11/16” wide soundhole, and a dotless, bound fretboard that looks similar to the one on the original White/Rice D-28. The back and sides are Indian rosewood and feature zigzag backstrip and aged white bindings.
Set up with medium strings, the guitar is bold and powerful, offering excellent balance, sustain, and clarity – all perfect for flatpicking.
This example was built in 2025 and, although it presents perfectly (and we’re an Atkin dealer), is in fact a pre-owned guitar. Atkin’s standard finish is aged, complete with finish checking throughout, so it’s near impossible to know the difference, but a tiny bit of fretwear presents itself if you want us to get picky.
The guitar is in great shape and has been set-up here with 13-56 strings and a stiffer bluegrass action of 5.5-7 64ths.
