Built with exceptional tonewoods, vintage bracing and neck design, and Pre-War trimmings, this Martin Custom M-18 is a unique and very special guitar. The M body shape was an evolution from Martin’s F-sized archtops that were made before WWII. Those guitars featured a 16” wide body that was roughly the shape and depth of an OM but was 1” wider across its lower bout. The first M-sized Martins were offered in the late 1970s and came into vogue after a few New York luthiers began retopping F-models for musician clients – most notably David Bromberg, and later-on, Steve Earle.
With the width of a Dreadnought, but the curvy waist and shallower body depth of an OM, the M-size offers a tone that is quite unlike any other Martin shape. The bass is increased in volume and presence but remains articulate and balanced. Trebles remain muscular and forward, and the mids have the classic out-of-the-way support that helps define Martin tone.
This Custom M-18 features an Adirondack spruce top that is built with scalloped Golden Era style Adirondack braces. The back and sides are South American mahogany that’s perfectly straight and nicely coloured. The neck features a Modified V carve, 1-3/4” nut, and a taper that places the strings at 2-5/16” at the bridge – classic pre-War wide-neck Martin spec. The bridge is a 30’s style belly with a through-cut saddle. The nut has an angled-bottom, and is carved from fossil ivory, as is the saddle. The headstock overlay is Madagascar rosewood, which looks just right behind the old-style logo. On the back of the headstock you’ll find a C.F. Martin stamp and a set of Waverly tuning machines. If you’re into vintage specs, this guitar checks all the boxes.
The guitar is in near-perfect condition, and apart from a few minor dents and light scratches, shows very little playwear. The finish shows a few very slight blemishes along the fretboard’s edges that were likely caused by humidity fluctuations, but there are no other issues and no repairs. This guitar pre-dates the era of binding issues, thankfully. We’ve just set this one up in shop with 12-53 strings and an action of 5-6 64ths. The frets are nearly unworn.
With original hardshell case.
