With its classic Southern Jumbo good looks, an incredible ’59 Gibson neck carve, perfect playability with first year factory big frets, and exceptional ‘50s Gibson slope shoulder tone, this crack-free 1959 Gibson SJ is checking all the right boxes. It was sold new through Mason’s Music in Toronto back when cars had tail fins, and it’s remained in the area ever since.
This Gibson SJ remains in excellent condition and is completely original save for its saddle, bridge pins, and first 3 frets - all of which were replaced here at Folkway. The guitar is without cracks or damage, shows very little finish wear, and was clearly well cared for. Its only structural repairs are a few cleanly reglued brace sections. The fretboard shows some fingernail wear in the area of the first 3 frets, the finish has flaked away from the pearl crown in the headstock’s face, and there is a tan line on the lower-edge of the top which has us presuming that this guitar spent some time in a guitar stand in the south-facing showroom window of Mason’s way back when.
A stellar SJ, this guitar has ample volume, strong bass response with mids and trebles nicely in balance, clean fundamental without too much overtone color, a bit of Gibson thump, and the sweetness we hope to hear out of any Gibson slope. In short, it’s got classic 1950s Gibson tone.
Mahogany and Sitka, X braced, small maple bridge plate, rosewood non-adjustable bridge. All the usual Gibson SJ appointments, original nut, tuners, and all but 3 frets. Set up perfectly with 5-6 64ths action.
Round, deep neck carve with 1-11/16” nut, .900” first fret depth, 24.9” scale, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle.
With hardshell case.
