Debuting in 1976, Gibson's Firebird III Bicentennial was released to commemorate the USA’s 200th anniversary. While the "Reverse" body Firebird V had been reissued in 1972 in Gibson’s Medallion Series, the Bicentennial Edition Firebird was the first official reissue of the "Reverse" Firebird III.
Unlike the original Firebird III guitars built between 1963 and 1965, the Bicentennial edition featured a stop tailpiece in place of a Maestro tremolo, and gold-plated hardware instead of nickel. Additionally, the guitar featured a distinct red and blue Firebird emblem over its white pickguard, giving the guitar an all-American aesthetic. The model was made available in Sunburst, Natural, Ebony, and Polaris White. Available information suggests that approximately 2900 Firebird III Bicentennial guitars were produced during the model's three-year run.
A lightweight and resonant guitar with an incredible-sounding pair of pickups and an undeniably cool aesthetic, this first-year Firebird III Bicentennial is an exciting guitar with a lot going for it. The original pickups - a standard Firebird pickup in the neck position (6.7 K) and a Bill Lawrence-designed "Sidewinder" in the bridge (6.1K), offer clear and articulate humbucker tones with excellent depth and bite. The neck profile is a heavenly early '60s-inspired rounded carve with a first fret depth of 0.803", a twelfth fret depth of 0.979", and a 1-11/16" nut width. At 7lbs 10oz, this Bird can be played comfortably for hours on end.
This Firebird is a largely original guitar that remains in very good condition after its five decades of use. Apart from a fresh refret done by our repair team and a plugged strap button hole on the back of the neck heel, this 1976 Firebird is completely original and unmodified. The original Ebony finish shows some playwear throughout - light chips, dents, and a few scratches. There is and area of buckle rash on the guitar's back, and a dent on the back of the neck behind the 10th fret that you’ll feel. There is light tarnishing to the instrument's gold hardware, primarily on the stop bar and bridge pickup.
A tremendously cool vintage Gibson with excellent playability and classic Firebird mini-humbucker tone.
