Launched in March of 2021, Gibson Custom's Murphy Lab division was tasked with creating the most accurate and convincing replicas of golden-era Gibson instruments the company has built to date. Under the guidance of Gibson's Master Artisan, Tom Murphy, the Murphy Lab is currently producing some of the finest guitars to bear the Gibson name since the early 1960s.
Gibson's SG Standard came into its own in 1963 when the Les Paul name was officially dropped from the model. Along with a change in model designation, the SG found its stride in mid to late 1963 with the adoption of the Lyre Vibrola, a better designed vibrato system than the side-pull Vibrola used between 1961 and 1963. Additionally, as Gibson began to shift back to fuller neck carves across their model range in 1963, the SG Standard began to feature larger neck profiles than the shallow necks of 1961 and 1962. The culmination of these changes resulted in the best variant of the SG Standard that Gibson ever produced. The '63-'64 spec SG Standard became the tool of choice for many notable players, including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ed King and, of course, our pal and Canadian guitar icon, Colin Cripps.
A beautiful tribute to the best years of the SG Standard, this 2024 Gibson Custom '64 Reissue from the Murphy Lab Division is a truly excellent guitar that would surely rival many authentic vintage builds. With its full neck profile, powerful and harmonically rich Custom Bucker pickups, and an excellent neck angle with plenty of break angle behind the bridge, this guitar has everything one could hope to find from an SG Standard.
This guitar presents in near-new condition. The frets are completely unworn, and there are no blemishes to be found anywhere on the guitar beyond the aging done at Gibson. It's always funny to refer to a factory aged guitar as being in mint condition; however, this 2024 Murphy Lab SG is about as mint as a used guitar can get.
Pickup DC values of 8.0k in both the bridge and the neck. Scale length of 24.75", first fret neck depth is 0.895", and the twelfth fret depth is 0.962". Nut width is just shy of 1-11/16”. The guitar weighs in at 7.4 lbs.
With original hardshell case.
