A fantastic PAF-equipped ES-335 that has made its way around the Toronto scene a few times over the past couple of decades, this 1962 build is an exciting guitar with plenty to offer.
The instrument is in excellent cosmetic condition and remains almost entirely original. The one notable exception is a long-ago alteration to the serial number, which places the guitar in the player’s-grade pricing category. The original serial number, “56331,” remains legible on the back of the headstock. With prices for golden-era ES-335s continuing to climb, this ’62 presents an opportunity to acquire an otherwise exceptionally clean Mickey Mouse-ear, factory stop-tail, PAF-equipped example at a substantially reduced price.
The guitar is free of structural repairs. The original finish remains in excellent condition with only a few minor chips and areas of checking. Currently setup with a modern bridge, the original no-wire ABR-1 is included in the case pocket. The tailpiece is a period-correct stop-tail; however, traces of gold in crevices suggest that it was originally a gold part that has had its plating rubbed off.
Both PAF pickups have had their original covers removed and reinstalled at some point, and the slot-head mounting screws on the baseplate of the bridge pickup may be replacements. While slot-head bobbin screws are found on PAFs from the early 1960s, wear on these particular screws suggests that they have been turned since leaving the Gibson factory. All other hardware and electronics remain original.
A fantastic-sounding ES-335, this ‘62 delivers exactly the kind of airy, open, dynamic, and overtone-rich response that one hopes to find in a golden-era semi-hollow. The bridge PAF measures 7.9kΩ and offers a full-bodied, powerful voice with beautiful piano-like clarity, while the 7.7kΩ neck pickup is warm and complex with an articulate attack.
With minimally worn and dressed original frets, an excellent neck angle, and a fast, comfortable neck carve that measures 0.780" at the first fret and 0.880" at the twelfth, this ES-335 plays effortlessly. The nut measures just shy of 1-11/16", and at 7 lbs 13 oz, it offers a particularly comfortable playing experience.
