1965 Fender Musicmaster II
Introduced in 1964 as an update to Fender’s original Musicmaster, the Musicmaster II brought a number of subtle refinements to the familiar design. These included Fender’s offset-waist body shape, a redesigned pickguard with separate metal control plate, an updated bridge, and a reshaped headstock more closely resembling that of the Jaguar.
This Musicmaster is completely original and in very good condition. The Dakota Red finish presents beautifully, with deep crazing throughout. A few small chips and dents are the only signs of playwear to be found. Shrinking of the celluloid pickguard has caused a few minor cracks in the material around several of the screws. The original frets have been dressed and still have plenty of life left. With its Jaguar-scale neck and a fresh set-up by our repair shop, this Musicmaster II offers an excellent playing experience. The original pickup offers a wonderfully airy, warm, and articulate voice that makes for some incredible rhythm tones.
Perhaps the most notable change, however, was the introduction of a 24" scale option alongside the 22.5" scale that had been standard on the Musicmaster up to that point. The longer scale made the Musicmaster II a considerably more adult-friendly option within Fender’s “student-guitar” lineup. It remained in the catalogue until 1969, when the model was discontinued.
Built at the tail-end of Fender’s golden era, this early 1965 Musicmaster II retains several desirable Pre-CBS features, including an L-series serial number plate and a dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. A neck date of September 1965 (8 Sep 65 B), together with pots dated to the 18th week of 1965 (137 6518), places its construction in late summer or early fall of that year.
This Musicmaster II is completely original and in very good condition. Shrinkage of the original celluloid pickguard has resulted in a few minor cracks around several of the mounting screws. The original frets have been dressed and retain plenty of life.
