1962 Gibson J-50

With style a-plenty, awesome strummy early adjustable bridge Gibson tone, and a fabulous neck carve, everyone here at Folkway has fallen hard for this 1962 J-50. It’s in beautiful condition, perfectly set-up, crack-free, and completely original except for… well, hopefully that part is obvious.

The pickguard is really well made and of very cool-looking red mosaic celluloid. It replaced the guitar’s original pickguard many, many years ago. As far as we can tell there are no top repairs concealed beneath it (large replacement pickguards can unscrupulously and easily hide top damage). There are no visible top repairs or cracks on the underside of the top. We don’t suggest removing the pickguard, however, as (a) it’s phenomenally cool as it sits, and (b) it would become phenomenally uncool if removed. Just our two cents worth. Don’t ask us to take it off though.

The guitar is crack-free and shows only a few reglued brace ends. It’s from 1962 so it still has all of its 1950s DNA, including 1-11/16 nut width, steep headstock angle, small solid maple bridge plate, single-ring rosette, and single-line Kluson tuners. The bone saddle insert and bridge pins are modern; the balance of the guitar is original. The nut hasn’t been removed, original frets are level and only lightly worn, and the guitar’s finish looks great with wear in the typical places.

Round neck carve with 1-11/16” nut width and .821” 1st fret depth. 24.75” scale, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle.

With hardshell case.
