1893-martin-0-34-5396
1893 Martin 0-34
Martin’s Style 34 guitars were catalogued from 1852 through to the end of the 19th century. They are fairly rare and are prized for their unique appointments and beautiful craftsmanship. This example’s top is dated 1893. It remains in excellent condition and perfectly playable thanks to a cleanly executed reset and some careful set up, more recently, by our shop. The Style 30 and 34 guitars feature unique multicoloured purflings and back strip that were vibrantly coloured in reds and greens – quite unlike any other style Martin offered. The rosette featured a pearl center ring and the body and fretboard were bound in ivory. The style 34 featured an ivory bridge, and this example was fitted with pearl-buttons and nickel-plated Seidel #3 tuners.

The guitar’s red spruce top features X bracing that is scalloped and light, with a single tone bar below the bridge and one finger brace per side. The top and back are attached to the sides by way of lining blocks rather than the kerfed lining strips that became the norm a few years later. Like most New York Martins there are 5 back braces rather than 4. C.F. Martin branding on the headstock, neck block, and back center graft. 2-piece Spanish cedar neck with a V carve and ebony fretboard; attractively figured Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It’s a fabulously attractive guitar.

The fretboard radius is about 14” at the nut and flattens out progressively up the neck to about 20” at the body joint. 1-7/8” nut width, 2-5/16 string spread at the bridge, 24.9” scale.

The guitar is crack-free. Its finish is original throughout apart from some touch-up around the bridge.

With modern hardshell case.

Shipping offered within Canada only.
C.F.
