1931-maurer-564-5634
1931 Maurer 564
The Maurer 564 was a lavishly appointed ‘Auditorium” sized guitar, second only to the model 593 in trimmings. The guitar features pearl and half herringbone top bindings and rosette, engraved pearl fingerboard and bridge inlays, and abalone floral headstock appointments. The body, soundhole, fingerboard and headstock all feature ivoroid bindings, and the guitar's bridge pins and tuner buttons are ivoroid to match. From the hand-engraved Waverly tuning machines to the heavy celluloid end-graft this guitar was designed with extravagance in mind.

Larson-built “Best Grade” guitars featured laminated rosewood and spruce top braces, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, and the finest selection of materials available. It's quite easy to fall in love with one of these, should you be lucky enough to find one. Thankfully, Whaley, Royce & Co - Maurer’s Canadian Distributor - marketed these guitars well in our area a century ago and today they find their way to Folkway more often that we’d expect.

This particular instrument is among the finest Larson-built guitars we've ever encountered. It was purchased from the family of its local original owner, and has very obviously been well cared for. It is completely original but for a new saddle, and is without cracks or repairs. Not a single loose brace, original bridge and plate have never been repaired or modified, the original finish is in impeccable condition apart from blushing on the body’s back that would have been caused by exposure to moisture. The nut has never been off the guitar, frets are perfect, and the tuners are in excellent shape. Beyond that, we’ve just finished the guitar's neck reset and set-up, and this Larson plays as beautifully as it presents. To find a Larson that has survived the years in this kind of condition is quite exciting.

A beguiling guitar to play, the 564 has a warmth and a rich mid-range presence that are stunning. Its tone is cohesive and balanced, with overtones and fundamentals working beautifully together to create a 000 sized guitar that is clean and powerful, but not clinical. It offers expressiveness when played lightly, and muscle and cut when hit harder.

1-7/8" nut, rounded neck with substantial feel and a 1st fret depth of .910”. Roughly 25.5" scale length. 2-3/8" string spread at the bridge, roughly 10" fingerboard radius, set up light strings (12-54), and an action of 5/64ths.

With original case and accoutrements.

Folkway Music · 1931 Maurer 564 - "Quiet Earth" written and played by Jason Fowler

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/178422975845651931_Maurer_564-0726-2Main.jpg?v=1790972993
