1935-gibson-l-00-5025
1935 Gibson L-00
A fabulous sounding mid-1930s Gibson L-00 with much more bass-end warmth, harmonic overtone and mid-range sweetness than most examples built after 1933. Gibson was anything but consistent in the depths of the Depression in 1935, and the tone of the guitars from that period can differ significantly from one to another; which is something that is particularly evident in their less expensive models. The secret to this L-00’s greatness is likely that its top thickness measures more like a 1933-build than what most 1934-1939 models measure. So, in the case of this L-00, Gibson’s inconsistencies resulted in a guitar that sounds noticeably above average these 90 years later.

A very well-preserved guitar, this 1935 L-00 is largely original and remains in excellent condition. Its only repaired crack is quite minor and can be seen near the bass-side waist of the top, where most L-00s crack. The neck has never been reset, the bridge is unaltered, and the saddle is nearly full-height. The finish is original throughout and in remarkably great shape. The tuners, nut, frets, and bridge pins are all original, too. The guitar’s only changed part is the bridgeplate, which is a well-made maple replacement. The bridge was likely reglued at the time the plate was replaced. There is some top deflection in front of the bridge as you might expect on a guitar with a top that’s thicknessed to early 1930s spec. Unrelated to all of this, the guitar has one of the coolest tan-lines we’ve ever seen on a guitar. The shadow of the bridge is forever tanned into the guitar’s top, from the sun shining on this guitar as it hung near a window, unchanged in position for years!

The guitar’s original frets show a little bit of string grooving in the first position but are otherwise unworn and unaltered. Playability is excellent, insofar as you like the feel of the small, low frets Gibson used in the 1930s. The neck has a deep V carve, 1-3/4” nut and a first fret depth of 1.025”. We have it set up with 12-54 strings and an action of 5-7 64ths at the 12th fret.

Mahogany and spruce, with rosewood bridge and fretboard. 2-3/8” spread at the bridge, 24.75” scale.

With modern deluxe hardshell case

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/1709246307463135GibsonL00-0224-2Main.jpg?v=1790971425
