1941-gibson-j-35-5240
1941 Gibson J-35
From the Folkway Vault comes this incredible, crack-free, two-bar Gibson J-35 built, most likely, in the early months of 1941. A picture-perfect example of Gibson’s second-last variant of the J-35 model, this slope-shoulder dreadnought features natural finish, scalloped bracing, a round and deep neck with what might be the most comfortable big-feeling carve ever, and earlier-spec 2-3/8” bridge pin spacing. It’s in amazing condition, it sounds spectacular and it plays perfectly. We could stop there, but we’ll keep going.

This J-35 is clearly a winter-built guitar as it’s survived without any cracks (apart from a tiny pickguard margin separation) and hasn’t suffered the loose bracing problem that so many vintage Gibsons are famous for. Beyond that, the factory neck angle is perfect and the lacquered bridge appears to have never been reglued.

Original finish throughout with some wear by the pickguard and to the back of the neck. Original nut, bridgepins and endpin. The tuners are a set of period-correct replacements that we sourced, and the new frets and saddle were recently installed in our shop. Playability is dead-perfect, with a full height saddle and action of 5-6 64ths.

A powerful, punchy, loud and fun guitar that responds quickly to your pick, this J-35 is a wonderful flatpicker that holds its own in a jam. It is dry and fundamentally focussed, offering excellent cut when pushed hard. Played softly, the warmth of the scalloped bracing takes center stage and a touch of the thump we generally associate with a post war J-45 shines through. The scalloped-braced J-35s are more closely related to early post-War J-45s than to three-bar 30s J-35s; imagine a ’47 J-45 built with a red spruce top, sort of.

The neck has a very deep and very round carve with a nut width of 1-11/16. Most people don’t yet know it, but this is their favorite acoustic neck carve. And that’s particularly true when the strings spread to 2-3/8” at the bridge, like they do on this J-35. The neck depth at the 1st fret is .995”, the depth at the 9th fret is 1.020”. Scale is 24.75”.

With period hardshell case
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/173767348768351941_Gibson_J35-0125-2Main.jpg?v=1790971934
