1942-martin-00-18-5624
1942 Martin 00-18
Mahogany wartime 00-sized Martins don’t get any better than this particular 1942 00-18. It’s actually taking a whole lot of self-restraint to not claim that guitars in general don’t get any better than this one, but understanding that tone, shape, and feel are subjective, we’ll err on the side of caution with our praise. Suffice to say, if you love small, lightly constructed mahogany guitars, this guitar is second to none.

Martin’s ebony-rod guitars built during the USA’s involvement in WWII are consistent shop favourites here at Folkway. We all appreciate their touch sensitivity, phenomenal openness, expansive bass response, intimacy, and beguiling overtones. As a general rule, they are excellent guitars. This example, completed late in 1942, is all that and then some. It is a guitar that we don’t want to stop playing; it’s inspiring and expressive and is remarkably comfortable too.

We’ve known this guitar for over a decade, having reset the neck on it back then. The neck angle remains very good, and the guitar is set up with 5-6 64ths action with 12-53 strings. This wartime Martin is in remarkably fine condition, the only repairs being a reglued top center-seam, a cleated “B string” pickguard crack, and small, repaired cracks along the edges of the fretboard’s extension. Playwear is light and mostly contained to the top, north of the pickguard. The guitar’s original frets show only light wear and play cleanly. The finish is original throughout, as are the tuners, nut, pins, and saddle. It’s quite rare to find a lightly-built 1942 Martin that remains in such great shape. More often than not the fretboard has been sanded thin by the nut to deal with excessive relief, or the top has deflected significantly due to the very light construction of that particular era. This guitar, thankfully, has no such issues.

Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack spruce top with scalloped X bracing, rosewood fretboard and bridge. The neck has a rounded carve in the first position that transitions to a soft V by the third fret. 1-21/32” nut width, .851” neck depth at the 1st fret, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle, and 24.9” scale. This 00-18 tips the scales at a feathery 2lbs 14oz.

With modern hardshell case.

Folkway Music · 1942 Martin 00-18

C.F.
