1952-fender-telecaster
1952 Fender Telecaster

One could easily make the case that no instrument model has had a more significant impact on the musical landscape of the 20th Century than the Fender Telecaster.

Leo Fender's first foray into the world of solid-body Spanish guitars began in 1950 with the introduction of the single-pickup Esquire model. While the first Esquires are undeniably historically significant guitars they were far from perfect instruments, lacking an adjustable truss rod and featuring low-quality pine wood bodies obscured by a solid black finish. Pressure from Leo's right-hand-man, Don Randall, led Fender to design a two-pickup variant of the solid body, complete with a more serviceable neck fitted with an adjustable truss rod.

Debuting under the moniker "Broadcaster" in October of 1950, Fender's double-pickup Spanish guitar featured a second pickup in the neck position, an adjustable truss rod and a translucent blond finish over a high-quality ash wood body. The Broadcaster was, in short, a near-perfect instrument with one exception: its name. In February of 1951, Fender was sent a telegram from Fred Gretsch Manufacturing Company, alerting them to a potential trademark infringement over Gretsch's flagship drumset, the Broadkaster. In a stroke of wordplay genius, Don Randall came up with a revised name, referencing a more recent and exciting form of media consumption: television. Thus, Fender's perfected solid body guitar, the Telecaster, was born.

An incredibly clean Telecaster from the model's first full year of production, this 1952 build is a beautifully preserved example of a "Blackguard.” Completely original apart from a professional refret and neck pickup rewind, this 1952 Telecaster is low on excuses. The original blond finish is in excellent condition with minimal playwear. Fine finish crazing and an assortment of small dents, scratches, and chips can be found on close inspection. The only notable wear is found is on the guitar's back treble-side edge, resulting from the guitar being played while seated. The original finish over the fingerboard shows some wear but is in excellent condition overall. All finish is original without any evidence of touch-up or overspray. The original decal is without chipping or flaking. A hairline crack stemming from a neck-mount screw-hole has been glued and poses no structural issues.

A fantastic-sounding instrument, this Blackguard is everything you would hope a golden-era Telecaster would be. The original and unmodified bridge pickup (6.1K) delivers wonderfully rich and full-bodied Tele tones with excellent snap, clarity and power. The neck pickup (6.2k) offers a warm and robust voice with clear note separation and a beautifully airy quality in the top end.

With its remarkably comfortable, full, rounded neck carve and professional refret this 1952 Telecaster offers a dreamy playing experience. The original fretboard finish remains original and unmodified. If you ever thought twice about having a vintage guitar refretted, playing this Telecaster would change your mind fast! Weighing in at 7lbs 6oz, this Telecaster is easy on the shoulder and will have you playing it, albeit carefully, for hours on end.

Neck dated September 15th, 1952 by Tadeo Gomez (TG 9-15-52).
