1965-rickenbacker-rose-morris-model-1997-330-s-4333
1965 Rickenbacker Rose, Morris Model 1997 / 330 S
Rickenbacker’s association with UK distributor Rose, Morris & Co began in the early 1960s, and instrument shipments to London began in 1964 and lasted for less than 5 years. The Rose, Morris guitars and other export instruments can generally be identified by their traditional F hole, rather than Rickenbacker’s usual modernized sound hole. Rose, Morris created their own model numbering system, which meant that a guitar like the one pictured here was sold as a Rickenbacker Model 1997 in the UK. If Rickenbacker sent the very same guitar directly to Canada, as was likely the case with this example, it would have been called a Rickenbacker 335-S, where the ‘S’ stood for ‘Special’. Today, collectors generally consider any F-hole Rickenbacker 335S a Rose, Morris 1997 even if the guitar never saw UK soil.

This particular guitar is an incredibly rare variation of the Rickenbacker model 330 Special. It would be a Rose, Morris 1997 if it were fitted with a Vibrola tailpiece - which is how Rose, Morris specified all of their import Ricks. However, this completely original example sports its original ‘R’ Tailpeice, and a traditional F-hole. This isn’t a combination you’ll encounter often (or ever, really). Our educated guess is that this instrument is one that was shipped to Canada in 1965 and was built as an export model 330 S.

A completely original instrument, with untouched original electronics, Fireglo finish, and all hardware, this Rickenbacker 330S / 1997 is a wonderfully well-preserved Rickenbacker from the heyday of their electric production. The frets are in good shape, neck angle and playability are excellent, and the pickups offer that classic Rickenbacker tone that shaped the sound of the ‘British Invasion’ and much of what followed though the 60s and 70s. There is playwear to the sides of the neck and worn finish along the body’s edges, but no excessive wear or abuse, no cracks, and no repairs of any kind. The neck has a comfortably round carve that’s much more playable than the 70’s neck carves, and the fingerboard’s lack of goopy glossy finish is sigh of relief from a playability and servicing perspective. The nut width measures 1-9/16”.

With original sticker-podged silver hardshell case
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/1635447210178666Rickenbacker1997RM-1021-2Main.jpg?v=1790969784
