1977-gibson-l5-ces-4207
1977 Gibson L5 CES
With its factory black finish and after-market Seymour Duncan Custom-Shop Staple-pole AlNiCo pickups, this is a serious rockabilly machine. Frets are excellent, neck feel is great (1-11/16” nutwidth), and the plugged-in acoustic archtop tone of those 50’s AlNiCo pickups have a perfect early Rock n’ Roll sound.

The L5 CES is Gibson’s Flagship 17” electric archtop. Introduced in the early 1950s this model is among the most prominent Jazz guitars ever produced. This example was originally equipped with Humbuckers before being fitted with its current pickups. There was no routing done for the pickup swap, but the mounting screws for the AlNiCo pickups required extra holes. Beyond that, the guitar was previously fitted with a Bigsby tailpiece (so go ahead and put another one on!). The original pickguard is in the case but doesn’t fit around the AlNiCo pickups. It can easily be reinstalled should the new owner go back to a humbucker set up.

Set-up in shop with 11-49 strings, the guitar plays very nicely on fairly unworn recent frets. Neck feel is excellent, and the guitar plays quickly and responsively. Round/oval carve with normal nut width and 25.4 scale.

The guitar shows playwear typical of a 45 year instrument. There is a repaired crack at the bass-side F-hole, and another small repaired back crack near the guitar’s bottom edge. There are a few scars on the top from the pickguard that’s not currently installed. Original Kluson Sealfast tuners, and all hardware is original but for the chrome Tune-O-Matic.

With original hardshell case
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0979/3660/5550/files/1620935090991177GibsonL5CES-0521-2Main.jpg?v=1790969486
