2006-martin-d-18ge-4391
2006 Martin D-18GE
Designed to offer the power, dry open midrange, blooming bass and treble sweetness a 1930’s wideneck D-18 is revered for, the D18GE featured body and neck design that was inspired by vintage D-18s housed in Martin’s own museum. The GE model (short for Golden Era) differs from the today’s Authentic in just a few ways – It was assembled with modern glues rather than hide glue, was built with an adjustable truss rod in the neck, and had its faux-celluloid pickguard adhered overtop of the finish. Built with fossil ivory nut and saddle and a Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay, this model only shipped to Canada with CITES permits, which are laborious to acquire in the USA. For this reason, Martin introduced the Marquis series (which substituted Indian rosewood for Brazilian), and now use Madagascar Rosewood in their Authentics.

This example is in beautiful condition and shows very little playwear to the frets and finish. Apart from finish damage at the lower corner of the headstock caused by a guitar hanger that wasn’t safe for lacquer, the guitar looks nearly new. It was set up in our shop and plays well, with flatpicking action and medium strings. It’s a great sounding guitar with plenty of bass, power, fundamental presence, and a dry and forward midrange.

Adirondack red spruce top with forward-positioned scalloped X bracing, mahogany back and sides, ebony fingerboard and bridge, and vintage 1930’s appointments. Fossil ivory nut and saddle, gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish, Waverly tuning machines. 1-3/4” nut width, modified V neck carve, 2-5/16” string spread at the bridge.

With original hardshell case

C.F.
