1968 Marshall JMP50 (plexi) 1987 Lead
The JMP50 watt Plexi 1987 Lead amplifiers built by Jim Marshall’s company in 1968/9 are considered by many to be the best amplifier since the original JTM45. From clean through crunch and onto a near-heavy metal distortion, the 50 watt JMP offered any sound a guitarist would want with the twist of a knob. The solid-state rectifier and EL-34 tubes combined to create an incredibly loud amp with serious punch and power out of the gates, without the sag that tube rectifiers create at high gain levels. From Jimi and Jimmy to Clapton and Beck, along with a seemingly endless list of some of the most influential rock guitarists the world has known, the JMP50 has been the amplifier of choice. If you’re after the tone of rock’s most important era, this is the amplifier that will take you there.
This example is in excellent condition and is nearly entirely original. It has just been meticulously serviced, tested, measured and documented by Toronto’s Dom Tantalo (@Marshalllespaulfan on Instagram). We’ve attached his service records to this listing.
Original transformers, original Brimar power tubes and Trigon 6CA7 preamp tubes. Original tolex, handle, and feet are in great shape, replacement logo, original cover. Servicing involved replacing the power switch, testing and cleaning components and installing one aged control knob, but changing virtually nothing but the AC cord. The amp works perfectly and sounds good enough to easily justify its pricetag.
