History of Folkway Music

Established in 1999, Folkway Music was founded as a guitar-building and repair shop by Mark Stutman.  Soon after opening, Mark became an authorized repairperson for C.F. Martin & Co., and it wasn’t very long before the demand for his brand of customer-service focused high-quality guitar repair was greater than he could handle on his own. By 2001 Folkway Music had a staff of three repairpeople and was already deep into the world of vintage instrument sales.

Early on, instrument sales became a much larger focus of the store. Searching out the best vintage guitars, mastering the art of guitar photography, and accurately describing tone in words became Mark Stutman’s second, third, and fourth jobs at Folkway, along with his continued focus on vintage instrument restoration, and more staff were soon required.  Vintage instruments have been the store’s focus since the very beginning, and new instruments were added fairly soon thereafter.

Within 5 years of opening, Folkway Music had grown too large for its 1000 square foot home, and embarked on a renovation that would ultimately triple the size of the store. Then, in 2012 Folkway Music opened its Waterloo, Ontario location – a half hour’s drive west of the original store. Built in 1906, the building at 22 Dupont St. East was once the home of Charles Frederick Thiele, a legendary Canadian band leader and composer. It was in this building in the early 1920s that Thiele founded Waterloo Music, one of Canada’s first music stores, and went on to build the nation’s largest music publishing house.

Today, our repair department continues to be the foundation of Folkway Music, and every instrument we offer for sale spends time on one of our repair benches before being made available for sale.  New instruments are carefully set-up, while used and vintage instruments are meticulously repaired or restored as required with great regard to historical accuracy and high-level craftsmanship. Our repair department is world renowned for the high quality of our restoration work to vintage instruments, and our store owner and head repairperson, Mark Stutman, is constantly in high demand to consult on all things vintage acoustic guitars.  He has presented at two Fretboard Summits, and has had articles published in The Fretboard Journal and Acoustic Guitar Magazine.   Many customers ship their instruments to Folkway Music from all over North America and Europe, thanks to our expertise and vintage sensitive approach to repairs and restoration.

Folkway Music is a different kind of guitar store, owing largely to the fact that its owner, Mark Stutman, has a relentless obsession for quality in every aspect of the store – from the repairs that are completed, to the service our customers receive.  Folkway Music is wholeheartedly committed to offering our clients the absolute best in instrument quality and a genuine care for our customer’s experience.  Have a look at our client testimonials, they say it better than we can!

Released by SolidGoldFX in 2023, the new flagship Diamond Pedals are built around the old designs. Designed and manufactured in Montreal, Quebec.

Diamond Memory Lane

Blending analog companding, anti-aliasing|reconstruction filters with a bucket brigade style delay line, Diamond has immaculately captured the ethereal essence of the original big-box Memory Lane using their innovative digital Bucket Brigade Delay technology (dBBD). Basically, you get all the goodness of the original Memory Lane in a smaller footprint, over double the delay time, extended frequency response, higher SNR, and at a fraction of the current draw.

This innovative progression of the Memory Lane is defined by 3 distinct delay lines to offer modern or vintage sounds.  The Memory Lane’s original fixed sampling rate delay line has been augmented with a new warm delay mode offering vintage BBD style variable sampling rate, warmer repeats and a 1200ms maximum delay time for gorgeous ambient delays as well as a new vintage mode designed to capture the magic of analog BBD delay pedals. Variable sampling rate, snappier repeats and 50ms-550ms delay times inspired by yesterday’s big box delays.

Space saving design, without any loss of quality. Features include top mounted jacks, Burr-Brown equipped buffered bypass with optional trails, tap tempo with subdivisions, AutoDiv, Doubler, momentary or latching modulation and more.

Diamond Drive

Drenched in classic Diamond DNA, the next-gen Diamond Drive is built on a foundation of signature drive and EQ soundblocks. Distilling the most desirable and functional elements of the original J-Drive, Blaze and Fireburst pedals, the Diamond Drive combines a warm and wide-ranging overdrive built around a Premium Sound Burr-Brown Op-amp with a dual band, post-gain active EQ.

The Burr-Brown equipped drive section delivers anything from a gritty clean boost to thick, natural asymmetric saturation while the dual-band active Baxandall EQ and selectable Warm High Shelf Filter dial it all in to perfection.

Space saving design, without any loss of quality. The Diamond Drive package is complete with top-mounted jacks, 9-18VDC operation and relay based true bypass switching.

Diamond Tremolo

Tremolo has been a staple effect since the 60’s. Now it’s time to welcome it to the 21st century. Don’t let your preconceptions fool you, this is not your average trem. Combining 3 distinct trem flavours into one pedal, the new Diamond Tremolo takes what it means to be a tremolo and pushes it well beyond the limits. At its core, the Diamond Tremolo offers classic amp style, optical amplitude modulation with sine, shark fin and square waveforms. Further enhancing the pedal, a modern FET chopper delivers a sharp edge, completely killed, tremolo effect and a new Dicer mode allows you to arm the pedal and use it as a momentary kill switch. Include the 11 rhythm control positions providing a number of different depth, mode and tempo accents and the updated Diamond Tremolo will be your go-to tone warping machine.

The Diamond Tremolo offers both warm, natural vintage amp-style optical tremolo with sine, shark tooth and square waveforms as well as a precise FET Chopper with momentary Dicer function.

Small but mighty. Loaded yet user friendly. The Tremolo offers Tap Tempo with subdivisions, 11 position Rhythm control, Insta-Chop, momentary or latching speed Doubler, and more.

Space saving design, without any loss of quality. All analog, Burr-Brown audio path with microprocessor control. Complete with top-mounted jacks and relay based true bypass switching.

Diamond COMP/EQ

There are few compressors that are more sought after than our yellow box Diamond. This next-gen compressor maintains the classic circuit architecture while increasing range and functionality. The new EQ section allows you to sculpt your tone in the same box that squashes it (that’s a good thing). Rather than mess with perfection, the Diamond Comp/EQ augments the original yellow box design with a new Mids boost/cut control, Attack switch, custom spec’d, US made opto-isolators and modern, quiet switching.

Combining silky smooth, natural optical compression with our signature hi-fi inspired, centre-detent active tilt EQ and Mid boost/cut control, the Comp/EQ is a mastering solution for your effects chain….one you might never turn off.

For the modern pedal-user’s needs. Space saving design, without any loss of quality. Complete with all analog, Burr-Brown audio path, top-mounted jacks, 9-18VDC operation and relay based true bypass switching.

Greig Hutton has spent the better part of two decades compiling data for this seminal work: Hutton’s Guide to Martin Guitars. He singlehandedly digitized most, if not all of the original archival documents in Martin’s museum and North Street attic, and has created a 436 page recount of every last detail of note that he unearthed.

From tonewood purchase records to decal suppliers, the first X braced instruments to the list of pre-WWII left-handed instruments, this book has more information packing its pages than just about any other guitar reference book ever created. Hutton’s Guide is a must-have for any vintage Martin guitar enthusiast or scholar.

The definitive guide by Martin Historian, Greig Hutton.

Santa Cruz Parabolic Strings are designed to offer a balanced tension across the fingerboard resulting in better over-all string balance and intonation.

They are available in standard or DADGAD tunings, and mid or low tension sets that loosely correspond to traditional medium and light string set gauges. Some set-up might be required to run these strings as the actual diameter of the strings varies slightly from traditional string sets.

SCGC Parabolic strings also feature a micro-coating for extended playlife.
