2013 Martin Custom Shop D-35 Seth Avett

The Martin Custom Shop’s D-35 Seth Avett model is a uniquely appointed, vintage-inspired re-imagination of the company’s best-selling HD-35, complete with copper snowflake inlays that were designed by Seth Avett, himself. The guitar features a high alpine Swiss spruce top with forward-shifted scalloped bracing, and a small maple bridge plate. The back and sides are Indian rosewood with a back center wedge of Hawaiian koa that’s bordered with bold maple and ebony strips. The body is bound in vintage style ivoroid with 4 layers of alternating black and white side purflings; the top and rosette feature herringbone marquetry. The ebony fingerboard is bound with ivoroid, and the original nut and saddle are bone. The headstock features an old-style Martin decal and Grover open-back tuners.

With its vintage style scalloped ¼” bracing and exquisite spruce top, this guitar sings with a fabulously warm, responsive, and strong voice. There is no shortage of volume and headroom, and the basses are very well balanced with the guitars mids and highs, which is fairly surprising given this instrument’s extra-light top bracing. It’s a remarkably capable strummer and flat picker.

In excellent condition, this D-35 Seth Avett is crack-free and shows very little wear. The bindings have been neatly reglued at the body waists, which is a common repair on Martins from the twenty-teens. The pickup has been removed and we’ve installed a NoJack endpin. Set up here with 12-53 and standard action. Frets are unworn, and playability is excellent. The previous owner buffed the headstock face from its factory satin finish to a gloss.

The neck has a low oval / Performing artist taper, a 1-3/4” nut and 25.4” scale. 2-3/16” string spread at the bridge.
