c.1925 Maurer Style 541 BRZ

With its 12 fret concert-sized body, straight-grained Brazilian rosewood back and sides, white spruce top and laminated braces, this Larson-made Maurer 541 has a marked fundamental presence, plenty of strength through the mid-range, and a string balance that favours melodic single note playing. It’s a strong and punchy little guitar with a thick and robust treble end and well articulated basses.

The Maurer 541 was similar to other Larson style 6 models, with colourful wooden marquetry around the top’s edge and soundhole, and a matching strip down the center of the back. The guitar is bound in white celluloid, and the fingerboard and headstock are ornamented with engraved mother of pearl inlays and dots. The Brazilian rosewood used for the back and sides is beautiful stuff – perfectly straight grained and quartered – and has a warm orange/brown hue.

The guitar has seen its neck reset and its bridge and bridgeplate replaced in past years. Its original nut, frets and tuners are intact, and its heavily patina’d finish is entirely original. There are no cracks in the back or sides, and only a couple of tight top cracks. The finish shows evidence of a pickguard that has been removed. The neck has a played-in feel and has seen much of its finish worn away, and the headstock overlay has chipped-away on both top corners.

Round and chunky neck with a nut width of 1-7/8” and a scale of 24.75”. The string spread at the bridge is 2-3/8”. The original frets don’t show much pitting and play relatively well, despite slightly excessive neck relief. The action is currently set at 4-6 64th at the 12th fret and the guitar is strung with 12-53 strings.
