c. 1920 Martin Style 1

A fairly early Martin soprano Ukulele, this Style 1 dates to sometime between 1917 and 1920, shortly after the ukulele came into production in Nazareth. These early Martin instruments featured rosewood friction tuning pegs and are easily distinguishable from those made after 1927, when Grover machine pegs were first used.

The Style 1 was Martin’s first ukulele model, introduced in 1916, and is among the most prolific instruments the company produced into the 1980s.

This example is in excellent condition and has survived the century since it left the factory in remarkable shape. It’s crack-free and has no repairs to mention. Apart from two replacement tuning pegs, it is completely original, including its finish.

Mahogany construction with rosewood bound top that’s accentuated by a delicate maple/rosewood purfling strip. Mahogany bridge with maple saddle, rosewood fingerboard with dot markers at frets 5,7, and 9, and bar frets. C.F. Martin logo on the back of the peghead and inside the body.

Excellent playability and setup. Original frets have never been touched but play quite cleanly regardless, but a heavy hand will bring out a little bit of fret buzz here and there as to be expected.
