1959 Gibson J-50
With its iconic late-50’s looks, feel, and tone, this 1959 J-50 checks every box for us. These early adjustable bridge Gibsons are unique among the company’s flat-tops, in that they are built with the same bracing, bridgeplate, and moderately light build as the 1955-57 fixed saddle models but feature an adjustable ceramic saddle insert in a bridge that is otherwise identical to the earlier drop-in saddle version. After 1961, Gibson modified the bridgeplate and bridge design considerably, which imparted a pronounced effect on tone. These earlier adjustable bridge models offer a strummed tone that’s unique and simply unbeatable.
This example is in excellent condition and is completely original. Its relatively light on playwear with original frets that show only a little bit of string grooving, and finish that shows its age but has clearly been well cared for. Its only cracks are along the inside margin of the pickguard and have been repaired, and a few braces have been reglued. The neck angle is excellent, and the set-up is an easy-playing 5-6 64ths with lights, and the tuning machines work well.
The neck carve is heavenly, with the classic round 50’s feel and medium depth. 1-11/16” nut width, neck thickness of .894” at the 1st fret, 24.75” scale.
