The Northfield NFB-F5A Big Mon features a slightly enlarged body that’s tuned for responsiveness and a rich voice. The design changes are quite subtle, but the tone difference between the Big Mon and a standard-size Northfield F are quite apparent. Expect an F5 with stronger mids and lows, and more openness in the bass register.
In creating this model, Northfield designers expanded the lower bout by 5mm, or a little bit more than 3/16”, and proportionally increased the body depth, F-hole size, and the scroll dimensions to ensure the instrument looks as attractive as a standard sized F5. The Northfield NFB-F5A Big Mon features modified recurve dimensions and back thicknesses as well, to bring forth the growly midrange that this model has become famous for. The hybrid varnish finish is the final ingredient in the Big Mon recipe, and offers more flexibility than nitrocellulose lacquer.
The Northfield NFB-F5A Big Mon is built with highly figured maple and Adirondack spruce (Engelmann spruce is an optional substitution). The fingerboard has a compound radius, large frets, and a scoop beyond the 20th fret. Grained ivoroid bindings to the body, fretboard and headstock, with vintage-style bottom purflings. Single-bound black pickguard, ebony board and bridge, Gilchrist/Northfield hinged tailpiece, and pearl headstock inlays. Gloss varnish finish throughout, nickel Grover tuners, and 1-1/8” nut.

The Northfield A5 Special borrows from the company’s flagship Artist Model F and Model M instruments to offer an exquisitely voiced long-neck A that will hold its own against any F5 or A model out there. Built with a tone-bar-braced Italian spruce top, highly figured maple back, sides, and neck, and finished with a hand rubbed spirit varnish, Northfield’s A5 Special is all about tone. Simply put, it’s an incredible instrument that is unbeatable in its price point.
Gorgeous Cremona sunburst finish throughout, ebony adjustable bridge, bound fretboard, and bound finger-rest. Ivoroid bindings with white/black purflings to the entire instrument. Nickel arrowhead tuners with black buttons, bone nut, compound radius double-cut fingerboard with guitar-sized frets and scooped end, Nugget tailpiece. Vintage-V neck with 1-1/8” nutwidth and 13-7/8” scale.

The neck features a radiused ebony fingerboard with scooped end, fiddleback maple with 1920’s carve, and a very tasteful fine inlay around the headstock’s perimeter. Bound ebony finger rest, cast tailpiece, Loar-style adjustable bridge, 1-1/8” bone nut, and Gotoh tuners. U/V shaped neck carve, 13-7/8” scale.
