Melvin Tucker was a highly regarded mandolin builder hailing from northeastern Georgia who’s instruments found their way into the hands of a number of notable Bluegrass musicians, including Doyle Lawson and Wayne Benson. This 1993 A-5 is labelled ‘Prototype’ and has the serial # 001T93, one instrument away of Doyle Lawson’s Tucker F-5 Artist, SN #2. Tucker never built many mandolins (estimates place his production at 60 mandolins), but he figured out how to make a good sounding mandolin out of the gates, and his instruments have been highly regarded since this very first one. Tucker passed away in 2019.
This A5 features a tonebar braced spruce top and tightly figured bookmatched maple back and sides. The neck is maple with a comfortable V carve, flat ebony fretboard and a 1-1/8” nut. Ivoroid bindings, pearl headstock inlays, gold hardware, ebony adjustable bridge. Gloss lacquer sunburst finish.
No cracks, repairs, or excessive playwear. The frets are in excellent condition and play cleanly, and the set-up has been taken care of in our shop.
A particularly good sounding mandolin, this Tucker A Prototype has an excellent chop and a dry and woody voice. Lots of headroom and plenty of volume, this A-5 is a fabulous bluegrass mandolin that pretties up nicely when played softer.
