The Starfire IV was Guild’s head-to-head competition for Gibson’s ES-335 when it was introduced in 1963. It featured a thinline semi-hollow double-cut 16” body and a pair of humbucking pickups just like the 335, an ‘Adjust-O-Matic bridge, 4 knob / 1 switch electronics layout, and dot inlays, too. And, like the ES-335 for Gibson, the Starfire IV became a mainstay of Guild’s electric lineup.

This 1978 example is in fabulous condition, plays beautifully, and is completely original. By 1978 the specifications of the SF-4 were changed to include a Master Volume control and block inlays. The guitar has a maple laminate body with center block, set-in three-piece maple neck with bound rosewood board, Schaller/Guild tuning machines, and chrome hardware. The pickups measure 7k and 6.8k, and the guitar weighs in at 9.5 lbs. The neck has a C carve, 1-5/8” nut width, and a depth of .824” at the 1st fret. 24.7” scale.

The original frets appear to have been dressed and show no playwear. The guitar’s lacquer has craze lines throughout, some mild buckle wear on the back, but not very many dings or dents. The nut has never been off, and all hardware is original and in good shape, except for one control knob that’s missing its reflector cap.

The guitar has been set-up in shop with 10-46 strings and is good to go.
