Making its debut in 1932, Gibson's L-7 hit the scene as a 16" wide, non-cutaway archtop with a carved spruce top and maple back and sides. The width was increased to 17" in mid-1935, and the cutaway model L-7C was introduced in 1948, which remained in production until 1972.
The 1950s and 1960s saw the production numbers of archtop acoustic guitars at Gibson taper off significantly. Approximately 3500 acoustic archtops shipped in 1950 but only 343 shipped in 1968. In the late 1960s the L-7C accounted for roughly a quarter of Gibson’s archtop production.
In all-original and excellent condition, this '68 L-7C is a visually stunning instrument. The vibrant Sunburst finish is incredibly well preserved, with some minor denting on the treble side of the tailpiece and few small scratches the only playwear on the instrument's top. The back shows light signs of wear consistent with contact from a shirt or jacket with buttons. The heavily figured maple used for the back and sides is quite impressive, though somewhat obscured by the dark finish.
Set-up in shop with Thomastick 12-53 Jazz Swing flatwounds, this guitar offers a warm and woody voice with the exceptional bass response that L-7s are known for. The neck has a first fret depth of 0.831", a twelfth fret depth of 0.976", and a 1-9/16" nut width. The carve feels fast, and is perfect for quick chord changes and lead lines. The original frets have been dressed low and play cleanly across the fingerboard.
25.4” scale neck, 2-1/16" string spacing at the bridge, weight of 5lbs 6oz.
With a similarly clean 70's Gibson hardshell case.
