1959 Martin D-28

The classic 1950s D-28, with gorgeous rosewood, big, bold tone with plenty of headroom, and a compact neck feel that offers a fast and comfortable right hand experience. While not in mint condition, this 1959 D-28 is low on repairs and offers exceptional playability thanks to a recent reset, refret, and set-up. Apart from frets and saddle, the guitar is completely original, with some honest playwear and only a few side cracks as strikes against.

B-string pickguard crack aside, this D-28 has crack-free Sitka spruce top with original bridge and bridgeplate and no brace repairs. The back is also crack-free. There are a few side cracks on both treble and bass sides, none of which extend to the neck or tail block; and all have been glued in years past. A strap button’s mounting hole on the neck heel has been filled and cleanly plugged without finish repair.

The neck reset appears to have been recently done and the angle is excellent. The frets and saddle are new and were installed in our shop; the frets we removed weren’t the originals, and the fretboard was thinned somewhat during a previous refret. The neck thickness at the 1st fret measures .792 but tapers to a full .983 by the 9th. With a full height saddle we’ve set the action to 5-7 with medium strings for flatpicking. We’re happy to adjust the set-up to buyer preferences. The nut width measures just about 1-5/8” which is fairly typical of late 1950s Martins.

A great flatpicking D-28 with a strong and clean fundamental, dry midrange and excellent string balance.

With non-original hardshell case.
