The HD-28 adds herringbone top trim, a zigzag back strip, and diamonds and squares fretboard inlays to the ever-popular D-28. For 2025, the new Martin Y25 HD-28 was redesigned with Golden Era forward-shifted, scalloped Sitka bracing, a 1930s belly bridge, and a new GE-modified low oval neck carve that features comfortably rolled fretboard edges, and angled-bottom nut, and a 1930s style long volute.

Martin's signature Dreadnought, the HD-28 emulates the D-28s that started it all back in the 1930s, and this version features a shaded top sunburst that’s styled after those rare D-28 shadetops from 1935. Today's herringbone D-28 has a powerful bottom end, lots of volume and headroom, richness and warmth, and a strong fundamental presence that's perfect for flatpicking. It is the archetypical dreadnought, and the most often copied acoustic guitar ever made.

The HD-28 has a vintage aesthetic, with herringbone purflings, aged white bindings, vintage style open-geared tuners and an old-style headstock logo. A bevelled-edge tortoise pickguard and red-eye bone bridge pins finish things off with a little bit of extra style.

The neck has a 1-3/4” nut width and .820” depth through the first fret. 2-5/32” string spread at the saddle, and 25.4” scale.
