Pisgah banjos are hand-built in Asheville, North Carolina by a small team of luthiers and admin staff headed by Patrick David Sawyer, who founded the company in 2014. Apart from making great sounding, great looking and great playing banjos, we’re also fans of Pisgah Banjo’s social and environmental practices, which are heavily focused on Appalachian history and culture, environmental stewardship and responsibility, and ethical business. Pisgah Banjos are built from hardwoods entirely sourced in the surrounding Appalachian Mountains, and they run a carbon-neutral shop that’s powered by solar panels on their roof. They also promote banjo history and its African American origins, they’re involved in anti-racism work in partnership with The Black Banjo Reclamation Project, and support the Appalachian reforestation charity, Green Forests Work. Added up, there’s a lot of good reason to be offering Pisgah Banjos here at Folkway.

The Pisgah Dobson utilizes a recreation of the original Dobson Patent tone ring that’s both loud and lightweight, which is a combination not typical of most banjos. In combination with this banjo’s maple rim and neck, the Pisgah Dobson is a responsive banjo with excellent sustain and projection and just a little plunk to keep things real. Pisgah banjos are endlessly customizable; we’ve ordered this one with a 26-3/16” persimmon fretboard, standard scoop, paddle headstock with star inlay, aged brass hardware, and a 12” renaissance head.

With Pisgah Banjo branded gigbag.
