The D-18 Modern Deluxe combines modern materials and deluxe appointments - as the name suggests - and is very much unlike any D-18 that has yet come out of Nazareth.
With a VTS torrefied Sitka spruce top and animal hide glue construction, the Modern Deluxe has a vintage bent to its voice mixed with the sparkle and open bass for which many contemporary guitars are known. The D-18 Modern Deluxe is built to be light and achieves this goal by using a titanium double-action truss rod and a neck carve that removes a lot of neck mass – both of which add to the guitar's airy and open voice. The bridge plate is a small and extra stiff carbon fibre and maple sandwich, which helps impart this guitar's quick response.
Cosmetically, the guitar is built with a number of quite noticeable upgrades from the standard D-18 model. It features rosewood bindings, gold EVO fretwire (which is extra hard too), pearl vintage-style headstock logo, wooden ring rosette, Martin's "liquidmetal' bridge pins, and gold Waverly tuning machines.
The neck has a lovely slim vintage feel to it, much like some of the most nicely carved necks of the mid 1930s. The carve is a soft V with a 1-3/4” nut, and a string taper to 2-1/4” at the bridge. First fret neck depth measures .800”, and its circumference is 2.57”.
It’s a very lightly built instrument, and offers a quick, open, airy, and resonant tone with an interesting compliment of overtones and a wonderfully responsive midrange.
This D-18 Modern Deluxe is in excellent condition, is beautifully set up, and completely original.
