With a warm, open, and pretty voice, excellent playability, and enough vintage vibe to scratch the itch, this 1989 Martin D-18 Lefty Conversion is a great choice for any lefty looking for an older Martin that won’t break the bank.

Built as a standard right-handed guitar in the late 1980s but apparently converted to lefty very soon thereafter (no pickguard tan), this guitar features a lefty Martin bridge, lefty side dots, and bone nut. The righty side dots remain, and the top’s bracing is factory right handed (which admittedly makes little difference). Original tuners, finish, and frets.

Set up in our shop, this lefty D-18 plays easily and cleanly with 12-53 strings and a 12th fret action of 5-7 64ths.

Sitka spruce and mahogany body, rosewood board and bridge, bone nut and saddle, Schaller tuning machines.

No top cracks, one repaired and touched up back crack, a few repaired and touched up side cracks including one through the endpin. There’s an old output jack that’s not connected to a pickup any longer, and an admittedly unsightly 1” washer is concealing some damage around the endpin that likely happened when the endpin hole was drilled out for the pickup install. The body’s binding has been reglued over much of its length by someone without enough experience in binding repair. If you can overlook the not-so-well-done side crack and binding repairs you’ll be rewarded by a guitar that sounds fabulous, has a great feeling neck, and excellent playability.

1-11/16” nutwidth, 1st fret neck depth of .830”, 25.4” scale, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle.

With hardshell case.
