Among the most groundbreaking young guitarists on the acoustic scene today, Billy Strings melds Bluegrass, Fusion, Jazz, and rock and uses an array of electric guitar effects in his acoustic guitar’s signal chain to create a style of music that’s all his own. He’s a super-gifted player, and a perfectly obvious guitarist to have a signature Martin model (or two) to this credit.

The Billy Strings HD-28 features two modifications that you’ll find subtle but quite impactful at first strum. The first is the guitar’s shorter 25” scale length, the second is the in-between nut width of 1-23/32. Both of these changes add to the guitar’s comfort and ergonomics, each allowing the guitar to be easier to play, with the shorter scale allowing for easier bends and a lower tension feel, and the small nut to reduce the workout on your fretting hand. It should be noted, too, that Tony Rice’s #58957 1935 D-28 had both a shorter scale and a skinny neck after repairs made to it right after Clarence White bought it in 1959. Coincidence?

The balance of the Martin D-28 Billy Strings is largely the same as a standard Y25 HD-28 but for a set of Grover 111 tuners and a Billy Strings signature label that’s affixed to the inside of the back. Sitka spruce and Indian rosewood, GE Modified scalloped X bracing, 30s style bridge with bone pins and saddle, gloss lacquer body finish and satin on the neck; angled bottom bone nut, old style logo, and Style 28 Herringbone trim.

We’re big fans of this guitar’s little tweaks and find it lovely to play.
