Inspired by the incredibly rare White Penguin guitars built in the mid 1950s, Gretsch's 6134B Black Penguin is an excellent imagining of a vintage guitar that never existed. The original White Penguins were essentially Duo Jets dressed up with White Falcon appointments. They paired the Jet’s semi-hollow mahogany body and laminated maple top construction with the gold sparkle binding, gold hardware, Cadillac tailpiece, large headstock with gold sparkle logo, and Grover Imperial tuners typical of a Falcon. The new Black Penguin is all that but finished in black, rather than white.
This 2011 build is in excellent condition and presents beautifully. There are no notable signs of playwear apart from some light tarnishing to the gold-plated hardware. The frets show only very light playwear.
Equipped with a pair of DynaSonic Pickups, this guitar delivers warm and airy tones with exceptional note definition and dynamics. The neck carve is medium "C" with a first fret depth of 0.826" that tapers up to 0.966" at the twelfth fret, making for a profile that sits in the hand comfortably, without being overly cumbersome.
24.6” scale, 1-11/16" nut width. Pickup DC values of 7.4k in the neck and 7.6k in the bridge. Weight of 8lb 12oz.
