In commemoration of Eric Clapton’s 30-year collaboration with Martin guitars, the company has created a very limited number of unique 000-42 Eric Clapton 30th Anniversary models; each featuring the guitarist’s hand-signed signature on its label and a numbered certificate of authenticity in the case pocket. A total of 300 Martin 000-42EC30 guitars were made, and only a few were shipped to Canada. It’s a sensational guitar to begin with; that it comes with Eric Clapton’s provenance makes it just that much more appealing.
The 000-42 Eric Clapton 30th Anniversary was inspired by the 1939 Martin 000-42 Clapton played at on his 1992 MTV Unplugged album, which subsequently won six Grammy awards and almost single-handedly revived the acoustic guitar market, which had been in terrible decline throughout the 1980s.
With quartersawn Guatemalan rosewood back and sides and a Golden-Era braced Adirondack spruce top that’s bound with style 42 pearl and attractive wooden purflings, pre-WWII style 42 abalone fretboard inlays, 30s style belly bridge with glued-in through-cut bone saddle, bone pins and nut, 30s style headstock shape and logo, and aged Waverly tuning machines, there is no part of this guitar’s design that Martin didn’t massage into perfection. This is the new vintage-style Martin we all have forever wanted.
It is an exceptional sounding guitar – probably the best sounding brand-new Martin 000 we’ve ever played – and is destined to only improve with time.
The 000-42’s neck is unique among Martins as it features an accurate 1939 carve. It has a wonderfully rounded C shape, .842” 1st fret depth, 1-11/16” nut width, and a perfectly rolled fretboard edge. Personally speaking, it’s the most appealing neck carve I’ve ever felt on a new Martin and rivals the feel of Martin’s 1939-48 necks, which are about as good as they get. The 000 scale of 24.9” adds to the easy and comfortable playability, and the 2-1/8” string spacing at the saddle is vintage accurate. The guitar plays beautifully, easily, and comfortably.
With its amazing tone, beautiful appointments, rare and desirable tonewoods, and Eric Clapton’s personally signed label, this Martin 000-42EC 30th Anniversary is everything one could want in a new Martin Guitar, and then some.
With COA, and custom-embroidered Harptone case. C$15,839
