The classic post-snakehead Gibson A-, this nearly 100 year old mandolin features the adjustable bridge, maple back and sides, and truss-rod equipped neck that became standard spec during the Lloar period at Gibson. This example is in great shape, with no seam separations, cracks, or top sinkage, and has been refretted and set up in our shop. It’s stage ready, too, with a Hot Wires soundboard pickup professionally installed wired to a tailpiece-mounted endpin jack. The original pickguard is showing minor deterioration at the bracket mount.
A lovely sounding A with plenty of warmth and openness, excellent string balance, and strength through the midrange. Gibson A models from the mid to late 1920s are generally bolder, stronger, and more capable instruments than those from a decade earlier, and this A- is all those. It is well suited to solo or ensemble playing and, although not a bluegrass instrument, offers enough cut to dabble in the genre.
Original finish and hardware throughout, less than average playwear, excellent playability, and great looks. U/V neck carve, 1-3/16” nut.
With original hardshell case.
