A great sounding 1950s 0-18, this small body Martin has become a staff favorite since it emerged from our repairshop recently with a fresh neck reset, saddle and set-up. With its characteristic string balance, chewy trebles, mid-range focus and well-articulated bass, this comfortably small guitar is fun to play and sits perfectly in a mix with other guitarists on larger guitars.
Apart from upgraded Waverly tuning machines (which install without any modification on this era of Martin), upgraded Antique Acoustic bridge pins, a new bone saddle and a ‘go back’ endpin that replaced a pickup jack, the guitar is original and unaltered. Its only crack is at the inside margin of the pickguard, which has been cleated; there are no brace or bridgeplate repairs; the bridge is full height and appears to have never been reglued; the frets and nut are original; and the original finish shows well below average playwear. It presents very well.
The neck has a particularly comfortable carve that’s almost C-shaped in the first position before transitioning to a soft V between frets 3 and 5. Typical of the period, the nut width is a slightly narrower 1-21/32”; but, thanks to a slightly deeper profile (.853” at the first fret, .996” at the 9th) and a well-rolled fretboard edge, the neck fills your hand just right. 24.9” scale, 2-1/8” string spread at the saddle.
The guitar is set up with 12-53 strings and a lowish/normal action of 4-6/64ths. Playability feels low and fast on original frets that show only light wear.
With modern hardshell case.
