1956 Gibson Les Paul
Introduced in 1952, the Les Paul model evolved in significant ways with each passing year until finally being replaced by the SG model about nine years later. In the trajectory from its trapeze tailpiece / low neck angle beginnings to its Sunburst / PAF apex, almost every model year of the Les Paul brought about something new to the guitar’s specs. 1956 Les Pauls are unique in that they feature an ABR bridge and P-90s. The ABR showed up late in 1955, and the P-90s were replaced by PAF Humbuckers sometime in 1957, making 1956 the only full year that Gibson Les Pauls featured both the ABR bridge AND P-90 pickups.
This example was sourced here in Canada and features the Made In USA headstock stamp found on export guitars. It is completely original, with intact original finish and all of its original hardware; and it remains in excellent, gorgeous, and fabulous condition. Needless to say, we’re excited to have it for what will likely prove to be a very short tenure.
Original unmodified electronics and wire harness, original frets with light playwear, the original nut has never been removed, original plastic parts and screws, original buttons the original Kluson tuners… we’re pretty sure you get the picture.
There is some well-worn capo abrasion on the back of the neck, as shown in the provided photos, and the perimeter of the headstock face has been ever-so-slightly beveled to reveal the holly veneer. Beyond that, the guitar’s only other blemish is a ¼” finish chip on its top, halfway between the tailpiece and the bottom edge.
The original lacquer shows some pretty crazing lines that highlight the very curly maple cap that’s hiding under the gold finish. This one was *almost* a sunburst!
Playability is excellent thanks to great frets and a perfect neck angle. The neck has a C carve, 1-11/16” nut width and a first fret thickness of .908”. Neck depth at the 12th fret measures .990”. This 1956 Gibson Les Paul tips the scales at a lightweight 8.7lbs. Its original P-90s’ DC readings are 6.2k (N) and 7.5k (B). It’s needless to go into tone. If you know, you know. But, yes, it’s that good.
With original 4 latch Lifton case.
