One of a run of seven instruments designed and built by Martin Custom Shop luthier Dale Eckhart, this OM is gorgeously appointed with flamed mahogany, cocobolo, and pearl. Based on Martin’s popular 14-fret OM model, this guitar features a forward-braced Adirondack spruce top and a three-piece back with a flamed mahogany center wedge. The sides and back are richly hued cocobolo. The top’s bracing features a Golden Era Sitka 5/16” X, small 1930s sized bridgeplate of cocobolo, and ¼” fingers and tone bars of Adirondack spruce. The back’s bracing is all ¼” Adirondack. The back and sides were spec’d thin for added resonance, and the entire guitar was assembled with hot hide glue.
On the outside you’ll notice flamed mahogany bindings with wood fibre purflings to the top, back and sides; style 45 back strips, mahogany end graft with mitred purflings, vintage Style 45 rosette of pearl, celluloid, and wood, and an 30’s style ebony bridge with drop-in bone saddle and bone Style 45 pins.
The neck is carved from figured mahogany with Martin’s performing artist taper and features an ebony fretboard bound in figured mahogany. The ebony headstock overlay follows on the theme and is also bound in flamed mahogany. Gold Grover vintage style tuners, old-style decal logo, and a bone nut finish things off. Nut width is 1-3/4”, .835” first fret thickness, 25.4” OM scale, and 2-5/32” string spread at the saddle.
The guitar has been set-up in our shop and plays as if it were new. There is no playwear to the frets or finish and, apart from a tiny ½” hairline crack in the center wedge of the back up near the neck block, the guitar pretty much in mint-condition. It has a K&K pickup installed and a strap button in the neck heel.
A dry, articulate, warm and open OM, this guitar offers all the classic tonal signatures of a lightly built red spruce rosewood OM. It’s clean and clear with excellent fundamental presence and offers a touch of sparkle to its piano-like openness and sustain. It’s an exceptional fingerstyle guitar that also excels when flat-picked.
And it’s beautiful.
With original hardshell case.
