Ampeg's collaboration with guitarist and luthier Dan Armstrong began in 1968. While the company initially wanted Armstrong's input on improving their line of Grammer acoustic guitars, their visions quickly shifted to the creation of an exciting new solid body electric guitar. Together, Ampeg and Armstrong designed the world's first production lucite guitar, with production lasting from 1969 through the end of 1971. The Ampeg Dan Armstrong model has been used by many big names in the guitar world, including Kieth Richards, Joe Perry, and Paul McCartney (who owns the only original left-handed Dan Armstrong ever made).

With bodies that were cut and routed from acrylic sheets and then buffed to a fully translucent finish, the production of the Dan Armstrong models was quite labour intensive. The finished bodies were outfitted with a neck made of maple with a rosewood fingerboard and a pre-wired pickguard made of high-pressure laminate with a faux wood grain.

These guitars featured an interchangeable pickup system in which pickups could be easily swapped via a banana plug connection. A channel was routed on the top of the body to allow a user to easily swap pickups without removing the strings. Six different pickups were designed by Dan's son, Kent Armstrong, which offered a huge amount of sonic versatility to the Ampeg Dan Armstrong.

A fine example of a first-year 1969 Ampeg Dan Armstrong model, this lucite guitar is in very good condition and remains largely original with the exception of tuning machines and a capacitor. The original HPL pickguard is nicely preserved and structurally sound. With lightly worn original frets that have plenty of life left in them, this Ampeg plays cleanly across the fingerboard without dead spots.

We’ve set this guitar up in house and added shims to the neck and saddle in order to achieve optimal neck angle and playability. The neck profile is full and wide with first fret depth of 0.885" and a nut width that is just shy of 1-3/4". This lucite guitar weighs in at a respectable 9lbs 5oz.

This Dan Armstrong model comes with its original blade pickup (8.7K), original humbucker (10.4K), and an additional modern blade pickup (3.8k).

With modern Ampeg hardshell case.
