With the new Super D-18, Martin has created something remarkably new and different for their model lineup: they’ve scaled up the traditional dreadnought body to create an instrument with roughly 20% more internal air volume. If you love the classic, dry, woody voice of a mahogany 18-series guitar but have always wanted more depth, a bigger and bolder low-end response, and increased headroom, the Super D is in a class of its own. It’s a massive sound, but somehow doesn't sacrifice the tonal hallmarks of a great D-18.
Despite its expanded proportions, Martin has carefully tuned the Super D's internal architecture to ensure it remains remarkably balanced. The VTS (Vintage Tone System) Sitka spruce top is paired with forward-shifted, scalloped bracing, allowing the guitar to respond effortlessly to a light touch while retaining clarity when driven hard with a heavy flatpick. The classic combination of mahogany back and sides and an ebony fingerboard and bridge delivers the mid-range power and defined-but-round trebles that will cut through a bluegrass jam.
For all its hugeness and increased acoustic projection, the Super D-18 remains surprisingly comfortable to hold and play. It features Martin’s Modified Low Oval mahogany neck with their ‘High-Performance Taper,’ offering a familiar, effortless feel up and down the neck. The nut width is 1-3/4”, bridge spacing is 2-5/32” and the scale remains a standard 25.4”. Standard Style 18 appointments include a full-gloss body finish, an old-style script headstock logo, a tortoise-pattern pickguard, and nickel open-gear tuners.
Like all our new Martin Guitars, this lightweight powerhouse has been inspected and set up in our shop, and comes complete with its dedicated, oversized premium hardshell case.
