Built in 2000 and signed by Ren Ferguson - then Gibson’s Master Luthier and head of Gibson Montana’s acoustic division - the Gibson SJ-200 Reissue, Luthier’s Choice is a gorgeous recreation of the company’s J-200 model from the 1950s. Ren Ferguson would have had his hands involved in this guitar’s production to some degree and penned his signature on the serial number label that’s visible through the soundhole.
The SJ-200 Reissue features a Sitka spruce top with scalloped bracing, highly figured maple back and sides, Madagascar rosewood fretboard and bridge, pearl headstock, fretboard, and bridge inlays, and gold hardware. The guitar’s hand-engraved and painted pickguard is an accurate 1950s reproduction, as are all the various details of this guitar – the headstock shape, truss rod cover, bridge design, purflings, and the backstrip.
The neck has a C-shaped carve with a 1st fret thickness of .836” and a nut width of 1-23/32. We’re particularly fond of the black stingers on the back of the headstock and the heel of the neck. Gorgeous!
The guitar remains in excellent condition and is completely original. The paint is wearing off the pickguard as you can see in the provided photos and there is light playwear to the guitar’s top and back finish. There are no major dings or dents, and fretwear is minimal. No repairs other than a new bone saddle by our shop, installed after the removal of a pickup.
The guitar sounds lovely. It’s big but balanced, and the little bit of compression afforded by the maple body helps the guitar remain controlled under any attack. It’s even great played fingerstyle.
With original hardshell case.
