1934 Martin 0-17
A bar-fretted 1934 Martin 0-17 with excellent playability, mature small-body tone and a wonderful neck carve. With their all-mahogany build and light scalloped X bracing the mid 1930’s 0-17s tend to have a thick and expressive voice that leans heavy on the midrange and offers a well-balanced blend of fundamental presence and overtone color. This example is exactly that and is a top choice for rhythmic fingerstyle and ragtime blues. It’s a fun guitar to play, with its full height bar frets and quick response, and it has a definitive vintage-ness that’s immediately felt and heard.
Crack free top and back, some minor repaired side cracks on the bass-side below the waist. Recent neck reset and fret dress (done elsewhere), new saddle and bridge pins by us. Original finish throughout but with minor touch-up on both sides of the heel. Original tuners with replacement buttons, original ebony nut. No top brace repairs or issues and the original bridge plate is perfect; a few back brace ends have been reglued. Original unmodified bridge. Action of 4.5 to 6 64ths at the 12th fret. The finish shows dings and scratches throughout, and there are two book-matched nickel-sized wear spots on the back that appear to have been caused by a guitar stand.
Rounded-over soft V neck carve with a nut width of 1-3/4”. 24.9” scale, 2-5/16” string spread at the bridge. Neck depth at the 1st fret is .830”.
