1968 Martin D-28

This fabulously clean, early 1968 Martin D-28 is among the last of the Brazilian rosewood versions of this model to be built with the older style small maple bridgeplate, prior to the company’s switch to rosewood later in that year. It’s a strong and loud Dreadnought with plenty of fundamental presence and lots of power through the mids and trebles and is well suited to heavy flatpicking or rhythm strumming where plenty of cut and volume are the name of the game.

The guitar is in remarkable condition and has been well serviced. It is completely free of cracks, shows very little playwear, and its only repairs are a well-executed neck reset, a pickguard replacement, and a few filled-in fingernail divots on the fretboard. The bone saddle is a nicely made replacement, and a Baggs soundhole pickup was removed from the guitar and is now happily residing in the pocket of the guitar’s original hardshell case. Original finish throughout, original un-altered bridge and bridgeplate, original frets, nut, and tuners. The pearl-dot bridge pins are a pretty upgrade, and a strap-button has been added to the side, next to the neck heel.

The guitar is set-up with mediums and an action of 4-7 64ths at the 12th fret with a full height saddle. Finish wear is limited to small areas along the sides of the fingerboard and the usual worn-away sectional on the body’s binding. There are some minor dings along the back of the neck and a light assortment of dings, dents, and minor lacquer crazing on the body. The original frets show average wear in the first position but play relatively cleanly with lowish treble-side action.

Gorgeous straight-grained Brazilian rosewood back and sides, Sitka top with straight braces, ebony board and bridge. Original Grover Pat. Pend. Rotomatics and original Corian nut. Softened V neck carve with 1-11/16” nut width. 25.4 scale, 2-1/8” string spread at the bridge.
