1969 Fender Competition Mustang

One of the coolest CBS era offset models, the Competition Mustangs were only offered from 1969 until 1973, and punched way above their weight as a ‘Student model’ guitar. They were finished in one of three colors – Competition Red, like this one, Competition Blue (which was oddly called Competition Burgundy in the Fender Catalog), and Competition Orange. A Blue version was used by Kurt Cobain with Nirvana, which catapulted the Competition Mustangs to cult stardom, where they remain to this day.

This 1969 model is 100% original and in particularly nice condition. Every solder joint and screw is original and untouched, and the guitar is really well preserved. It’s an early example with a color-matched headstock (something that lasted until sometime in 1970), and the Candy Apple red finish has faded to a cool metallic copper color on the front of the guitar. The original frets show no wear, and the original trem arm is still with the guitar.

Neck dated May of 1969, pickups dated 22nd week of 1969, pots dated 1966 as is common through the late 1960s. Pickup DC values are 5.65 and 5.75 kOhm, and the guitar weighs 6.75 lbs. The neck has a rounded shape and a standard Fender nut width of 1-5/8. Thickness at the 1st fret is .84” and it measures .93” at the 12th fret. 24” scale length.

With original hardshell case.
